Is it possible to fly like a bird by flapping ones arms?

  • I wish it was. You see, I have been flying my own little aircraft for many years. Last summer, I suffered a heart attack and they have now taken away my pilot license.

    I would do anything to fly again. Perhaps, I will buy a hang glider. ¨You don't need a pilot license to fly that. Of course, if I could flap my wings, it would be cheaper but ... :-)

  • No, it certainly isn't. We aren't built for flying.


  • Not if the wings were human powered. Obviously with hang gliders and ultralights we have worked out the wing size and loading and power requirements for personal human flight. The trouble is that these wings are far too large for our human arms to move and manipulate into powered flight in the way that a bird does.

    But imagine a 'bird suit' that one wears and has a a power apparatus to magnify the movement of our arms. (like a power steering booster for flapping wings). We could probably invent something like that but then we have a new problem with the added weight of the suit, wings, power apparatus and fuel. It becomes ever more complex when an ultra light with small IC engine is so simple. But who knows - with the right material science and power system it is probably in the realm of the possible, if not practical.


  • A birds bones are hollow, their chest muscles are rigged differently, their "arms" are shaped like an aerofoil. NONE of these characteristics describes a human. We are too dense, not aerofoil shaped and not STRONG enough in the chest muscles to fly in that way


  • Sure, but your arms need to shaped like wings and your bones need to be hollow. If this is the case, it should be possible.
